COVID-19 cases on the rise again in Washington state

New coronavirus cases increased in 9.5% in Washington state in the latest week ending Sunday as the state added 5,357 cases. The previous week had 4,893 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Washington ranked 37th among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week, the United States added 379,753 reported cases of coronavirus, an increase of 1.1% from the week before. Across the country, 30 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Within Washington state, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Whitman, Kittitas and Douglas counties. Adding the most new cases overall were King County, with 1,392 cases; Pierce County, with 962 cases; and Spokane County, with 435. Weekly case counts rose in 25 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week’s pace were in Whitman, King and Pierce counties.
