Hannegan & Smith Roads roundabout work and traffic impacts begin

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Readers have reported site visitors impacts within the space of a deliberate multi-lane roundabout on the intersection of E Smith Highway and Hannegan Highway. Officers with Whatcom County Public Works (WCPW) say such impacts will be anticipated.

Utility relocation work across the undertaking space started this week and is predicted to proceed weekdays till the tip of Might. This work is predicted to create delays for motorists and alternate routes are suggested.

Extra work to arrange for constructing the roundabout is predicted to start across the finish of Might and proceed by July 4th. Whereas lanes will stay open, motorists can anticipate delays.

The intersection is then anticipated to be fully closed to site visitors and a detour across the work space will probably be posted. The contractor is allowed to shut the intersection for a complete of 25 consecutive calendar days between July eighth and August seventh, based on WCPW. 

As of the tip of 2023, the undertaking is estimated to be accomplished someday within the fall of 2024.

WCPW officers stated they’re working to finalize schedule particulars with Stremler Gravel Inc., the undertaking contractor. 

The multi-lane roundabout is predicted to be geared up with a “curb-separated pedestrian and bicyclist amenities.”

This multimillion-dollar undertaking is being funded by $3,952,642 in federal funds, together with $2,500,000 in Floor Transportation Block Grant funds, $1,000,000 in Freeway Security Enchancment Program funds and $452,642 in Carbon Discount Program funds based on WCPW.
